Festivals are the celebration of togetherness the celebrations of being one of the family. Raksha Bandhan is known by different names in different states of India, by different communities. 

Raksha Bandhan significance also varies with the region. Raksha Bandhan has a different significance in southern and coastal regions. Raksha Bandhan is called Nariyal Poornima or coconut full moon in the Western Ghats that includes the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka.

Raksha Bandhan day is called Shravani or Kajari Poornima in Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. Raksha Bandhan, here is an important day for farmers and women who have sons. The Raksha Bandhan day is celebrated as Pavitropana in Gujarat. Raksha Bandhan is the day when people perform the grand pooja or the worship of the three eyed God, Lord Shiva.

Here Raksha Bandhan signifies the beginning of a new season for those dependent on sea. Festival of Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan is one such major occasion. Rakhi is a sacred thread embellished with sister's love and affection for her brother. Raksha means protection and Bandhan means bound. Thus Raksha Bandhan means the Bond of Protection. 

The sisters tie a sacred thread of love to their brothers amongst chanting of mantras, put roli and rice on their forehead and pray for their well being. Sisters bestow their brothers with gifts and blessings. On this day, Sisters tie a special band on their brother wrist as a mark of affection. This thread is called the Rakhi. The brother in return takes a lifelong vow to protect their sisters.

Brothers also wish them a good life and pledge to take care of them. Brothers give their sisters return gifts. The gift is the acknowledgment of his love for his sister, reminder of their togetherness and a symbol of his pledge. There are several historical evidences, which remind us about the significance of this festival and every time, this festival emphasizes the same values which have been mingled along with the festival.
