Indira Ekadashi Vrat katah (इन्दिरा एकादशी व्रत कथा)

==========================================
Yudhisthira enquired, “O Krishna! Please favour me and tell me the name of the Ekadashi that falls in the dark half of the month of Ashwin.”

Sri Krishna said, “O King! The name of the Ekadashi that falls in the dark half of Ashwin (Bhadrapada according to Gujarat and Maharashtra) is Indira. By virtue of observing the vrata of this Ekadashi even great sins are destroyed. It gives salvation to the dead ancestors who may be languishing in lower species.

O king! In Satyayuga there was a famous price named Indrasena. He later became the king of Mahishmatipuri and righteously ruled over his kingdom, earning renown for himself.

King Indrasena was a devout follower of Lord Vishnu. He spent his time repeating the various Moksha-giving Names of the Lord and meditating upon the Supreme Spirit. One day, when the king was comfortably seated in his assembly, Sage Narada descended there from the sky. The king immediately got up with folded hands and provided the divine Sage with a proper seat after duly worshipping him. The king then said to the Sage, ‘O best Sage! By your grace I am fulfilled in every respect. Today by virtue of your pious darshan, all my sacrifices and virtuous deeds have come to fruition. O divine Sage! Kindly tell me the reason for your coming.’

Narada said, ‘O excellent among kings! My words will surprise you. From Brahma’s abode I had gone to the abode of Yama. Devoutly honoured by Yama, I sat on an excellent seat. I saw your father who was there as the result of a fault in the observance of a vrata. He has given the following message for you – ‘O dear Son! Observe the Indira Ekadashi vrata and offer its virtues to me so that I may proceed to heaven.’ Thus, I have delivered your father’s message to you. O king! Do observe the Indira Ekadashi vrata with the pious intent of sending your father to heaven.’

The King then enquired, ‘O revered one! Please tell me about the Indira Ekadashi vrata. In what manner is this vrata to be observed, in which fortnight, and on which date?’

Narada said, ‘O excellent among Kings! Listen. I shall tell you the auspicious way in which this vrata is to be observed. On the auspicious tenth day in the dark half of Ashwin, one should bathe early in the morning with a devout mind. Then he should bathe at mid-day again, and eating only once with a composed mind, he should sleep on the ground at night. When on the Ekadashi day the bright morning has dawned, he should brush his teeth with a datun before taking his bath. Thereafter he should devoutly take up the vow of fasting by chanting the following mantra,

‘After remaining without food and without all pleasures today, I shall eat tomorrow, O lotus-eyed one! O Lord Vishnu! Be my refuge.’

One should duly perform shraddha in front of the Shalagrama Shila at mid-day in order to propitiate the manes, offer dakshina to the Brahmins and please them with food. The lumps of cooked grains offered to the manes should be fed to the cows after having smelt them once. After worshipping Lord Vishnu with incense, sandal, etc., he should remain awake at night in the vicinity of the Lord’s idol. At the break of dawn on the twelfth day, he should devoutly worship Lord Sri Hari once again. After having satiated the Brahmins with food, he himself should partake of food along with all his kinsmen keeping strict restraint of speech.

O king! Carefully observe the vrata in this manner. This will take your dead ancestors to the abode of Lord Vishnu.’

After delivering this message, Sage Narada disappeared. The king, along with his wives, sons and servants, observed the excellent vrata in the manner prescribed by the Sage.

O son of Kunti! On the due observance of the vrata, flowers were showered from the sky. Indrasena’s father, mounted on the vehicle of Lord Vishnu (Garuda), went to Lord Vishnu’s abode. The royal sage Indrasena, having ruled his kingdom free from troubles and having duly installed his son on the throne, also proceeded to heaven. Thus I have told you the importance of the Indira Ekadashi vrata. A man is freed from all his sins by reading or listening to this narration.” *
