September 9, 2021 - Thursday

When is Hartalika Teej in the Year 2021?

Teej festivity is observed with much fanfare by women in North Indian states, especially in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. Hartalika Teej is one of the three famous Teej(s) which are celebrated by women during Sawan and Bhadrapada months.

This is a three-day festival, celebrated by women also in honor of Maa Parvati, in the month of Bhadrapad. By praying to Maa Parvati on these three days, unmarried girls hope to get a husband like Shiva. Married women pray to her for marital bliss. According to Hindu mythology, Parvati was in love with Shiva. Being an ascetic however, Shiva was not aware of her. Parvati performed penance on the Himalayas for many years before Shiva finally noticed her.

Realizing the depth of her love and devotion, he agreed to marry her. Since then Maa Parvati has been worshipped as Haritalika.

Women celebrate Haryali Teej and Kajari Teej by visiting their parent’s house, but they come back to their in-laws’ house for Hartalika Teej. As they are back to their husbands, they try to look most beautiful by wearing new clothes, glittering jewelry and tempting bangles. Teej festival offers a chance to the women for wearing all the accessories of Shringar (make-up) on this day.

Some of those Shringar accessories are such that they put mehandi tattoos on hands, mahavar designs on their feet, kohl in their eyes, Bindi on their forehead and many more. As it is all done on the occasion dedicated to Mata Parvathi, women also decorate the idols of Maa Parvati in the same way.

Women and young girls perform Nirjala Vrat on these three days, and keep awake all three nights. This is symbolic of the penance which Parvati undertook to get Shiva as her husband. They offer food to Brahmins and young girls.
