Lohri was earlier called Tilodi. This word is made from the combination of the words sesame and Rodi (Jaggery Macadam). It is also called Lohri. Many people said that this festival marks the arrival of winter season. 

On Lohri, people bathe in the Ganges, Jamuna and other rivers. This festival has special significance in the Sikh community, they also visit the gurudwara and offer prayers and enjoy this festival. 

In Hindus people also see and worship their Ishta Dev, some people are pleased with the offering of sesame to Lord Shiva. On this day people donate pulses, rice khichdi, sesame, good, ghee, salt etc. to the pandits and the donors themselves eat khichdi. The Puras have described sesame donation as free from sin.

Lohri is a famous festival in India. It is celebrated on the day before Makar Sankranti. In the open space at night, the family and the people of the neighborhood sit together on the edge of the fire. At this time Revdis, peanuts, etc. are eaten and Lohri songs are sung.

Lohri is traditionally associated with the rabi crop and thanks God for his good harvest.
