Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashami. This festival is celebrated with great pomp on the day of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. This festival symbolizes the victory of religion over unrighteousness, victory of truth over untruth and destruction of egoism. That is why it is called as Vijayadashami.

This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm on the tenth day of the bright fortnight of Ashwin month. King Rama of Ayodhya killed the demon Ravana on this day and rescued Mother Sita from her captivity. The Hindu king considered this day auspicious and traveled on this day for the war. This is the date of arms worship. This date is considered beneficial for victory in war.

The effigy of Ravana, symbol of good over evil, is lit on this day in every district, towns, villages, cities etc of the country.

On this day the whole society was Fearless. Rama worshiped Durga before killing Ravana. Mother Durga was pleased with his worship and gave him the boon of victory.

Ravana combustion is still performed with much pomp today also fireworks are craked. Fairs are held in many places. Ramlila is also organized. Ravana was a great scholar and a brave man, but his ego was the cause of his destruction. 

This festival fills life with joy and Happiness, it is a festival of enthusiasm, joy, happiness, and victory. It is celebrated in different ways in every corner of the country, but it is celebrated with the same enthusiasm and gaiety in other countries where the diaspora Indians live.
